So I’m starting to review my favorite sub-genre in film: french horror. The first is Jean Rollin’s almost tantalizing but mostly titillating “Le Viol Du Vampire”.

Coming on the heels of the great french auteur black/whites with complex artistic visuals and character driven stories, it’s no surprise this film is visually driven. But hell, ‘80 b-film horror has more character development than this story who believe introducing people or why they are even in the story is above true directors. Nor does it delve into psycho horror. Which it damn should have. When a town is set on murder based on fear not logic, it’s a nature social commentary on, oh wait, illogical fears causing decent people to do bad things. Like rape a vampire. The plot implodes to this pointless mess of people doing shitty things for no reason and with zero logic.

Even visually the film lacked defining shots or a true artistic look. The lack of ‘horror’ is even disappointing. With old french films I know I get more gory violence than any other countries’ films in that same time period. This is why I love french horror because they show things before anyone else would dream of showing it. But no, I only get a non-gory student film that shows tits every ten minutes.

The lesson here is that even the most horrific acts aren’t that horrific if the characters aren’t remotely humanized. I can forgive bad acting and shitty plots if, in that moment of suspense or brutalizing act, I’m on the victim’s side cringing in fear or disgust.

Side-note: Who the fuck rapes a vampire? They’re stronger. And with one bite you become a vampire. If you got bitten, would it not defeat the whole purpose of raping and killing said vampire because there would still be a vampire and, worst, it would be you. Unless you rape it after you’d killed it, but that’s not really rape is it?

True. A corny beginning. But their laid-back resonance sure thrives once the song begins.
